Help
How do I submit a photo?
Simply send it by e-mail to our contact address with all relevant family details. Remember, the people in the photograph must be from the Scottish Highlands and Islands. You must also indicate if you are willing to allow the photo to be passed on for a fee to other genealogists or publishers for commercial purposes. If not, this will be noted in its tag information, but if you do, the SHPA operates on a 50/50 remuneration basis of any revenues gained from your image.
Can I submit a photo if I don't know the name of the person?
Yes, but clearly state how the photograph came into your possession, and what details you may have on its provenance.
Is there a fee in order to submit a photo?
No.
After I submit a photo, how long will it take before it appears on the site?
Your photo will be uploaded within 2 weeks of being received.
Once I have submitted a photo, how long will the photo remain on the site?
For as long as you wish.
Will there be a way to find out who submitted other photos?
All photos submitted that are not the property of the SHPA will be credited by name, unless we are asked not to.
Will I be able to purchase a photo?
Yes. Please visit the Prints section for more information.
There are copyright watermarks on the photos. Will you place this on my images?
All images appearing on the SHPA website will bear the watermark to protect them from unauthorised use. The copyright will remain with the contributor.
Do you have photos from other countries?
The core archive is from, and based in Scotland. Submitted photos from other countries are accepted providing reliable verification that the subject was born and bred in the Scottish Highlands.
I have some photos that I do not want or cannot take care of. Can I donate them to the SHPA?
Yes, of course, and if relevant, they will be added to the SHPA. Do get in touch even if your collection doesn't involve Scotland. We will be able to pass them on to the pertinent archive or library. Rescuing lost images and saving them for posterity is our business, whatever the subject matter.
Can you help me locate my ancestors or my family?
Sorry, but no. Try the Links page for some organisations which provide information and services for family historians.
