Caption: | Stewart Ross, Grampian Records. Inverness singer and songwriter born in Merkinch in 1929. A well known performer from the 1960s-1980s, signed with Grampian Records in February 1965, about the time this portrait was taken. He wrote 'My Bonnie Maureen' which sold over 350,000 copies for Daniel O'Donnell. He also contributed lyrics to Calum Kennedy's famous recording of 'The Dark Island.' The Am Baile website have published a radio interview with him from 1988 and the songs he wrote are now more widely available via YouTube and MP3 download. 'The Dark Island', sung by Daniel O' Donnell, was in the top thirty of the album charts at the end of 2018. Stewart Ross died in 1993. (Information kindly provided by his son, Alan Ross). |
