Police Constable William Armstrong, Diriebught Road. Joined the police on 7th November 1936 aged 18 and retired aged 50 on 15th November 1968. After a period in the army (1942-1944) he made Chief Inspector of the Inverness Burgh Police and Deputy Chief Constable. Bio details thanks to Dave Conner. (Damaged plate).

Gamekeeper David Sutherland with his brother Angus. The Sutherlands were originally from Kildonan but moved to Hilton village near Fearn. Angus was the Factor at Carbisdale Castle. David later served in the Inverness-shire Constabulary (1880-1887). Originally a gamekeeper in Helmsdale, he served in the police at Dores, then four years on Barra, then Locheport (North Uist), from where he returned to gamekeeping. He finished up owning the Hilton village pub and used to buy the newspaper and read it to the other villagers on the way back to the hotel. Submitted by Carole Urquhart James. (AP/H-0274)

Sir Michael William Selby Bruce, 11th Baronet, born Ensenada, Lower California on 27th March 1894 was an author and adventurer. Succeded his father, Sir William Waller Bruce, in 1912. Michael Bruce entered Abingdon School, then joined the British South Africa Police as a trooper in 1913. After First World War service with the Royal Artillery at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, Bruce became a traveller, largely in Africa and South America, and an author and newspaper columnist. Had a distinguished military career and made propaganda films during Second World War then returned to the Royal Air Force, serving in a barrage balloon unit, with 901 (County of London) squadron, Royal Air Force Regiment. Later in the war he was Senior Weapons Instructor for glider pilots at Bridgnorth. Had several publications including 'Songs From the Saddle,' 'Hunter's Yarns,' 'The Royal House of Bruce' and 'Tramp Royal.' He was the elder brother of actor Nigel Bruce and died at Vancouver, British Columbia on 20th May 1957.

Chief Constable William Fraser MM KPM OBE, a native of Lochbroom, was appointed to the post of Chief Constable of Inverness-shire with effect from 1st December 1936. He succeeded Major A.C. Maclean who had held the post since 1911. Mr Fraser was aged 39 years at the time of his appointment, and transferred from the Dunbartonshire Constabulary where he had served since 23rd December 1919. Prior to joining the Police, Mr Fraser had served in the Seaforth Highlanders from 1913 to 1919 and had been awarded the Military Medal. During his almost 15 years in command of the Inverness-shire constabulary, Chief Constable Fraser was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in January 1944, and the King's Police Medal (KPM) in 1950. He retired on pension from the Inverness-shire force on 17 August 1951. Biographical information kindly provided by Dave Conner.
