A. Buchanan and M. Montgomery 1919. Alexander MacLeod was born around 1900 in a village just outside of Stornoway. A passionate photographer, Alec kept some type of camera (still and motion) close by his side for his entire adult life. The photos in his collection are invariably of family and friends and scenic shots from around Stornoway (possibly Laxdale), travels in the Highlands and around the world. A few of these Highland images from the early 1900s have been submitted to the SHPA archive by his grandson Iain MacLeod of Nova Scotia.

Hugh MacDiarmid, January 1927. MacDiarmid was the pen name of Christopher Murray Grieve (1892-1978), Scottish poet, journalist, essayist and political figure. He was instrumental in creating a Scottish version of modernism and was a leading light in the Scottish Renaissance of the 20th century. Unusually for a first generation modernist, he was a communist. Much of MacDiarmid's political life, however, was spent advancing the cause of Scottish nationalism. He wrote both in English and in what he referred to as 'Synthetic Scots' - a literary version of the Scots language that is sometimes referred to as Lallans.

Brigadier Eneas Grant, born 1901, belonged to a family which served in the Seaforth Highlanders for four generations. He served in the regiment from 1920 to 1955, when he retired to his house and hill farm at Tomatin. Both his sons joined the Seaforth, the elder being killed in action in Korea in 1951. The supplement to the London Gazette of October 1945 announced 'The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following awards in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North-West Europe: Brigadier (acting) Eneas Henry George GRANT, D.S.O., M.C. (18829), The Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, The Duke of Albany's) (Tomatin, Inverness).' An un-dated newspaper cutting from 1951 is filed with the negatives. It announces his being awarded a C.B.E. and states: 'Brigadier (Temporary) Eneas Henry George Grant, D.S.O, M.C., late Infantry. Brigadier Grant is the only surviving son of the late Col. H.G. Grant and of Mrs I. Grant, Balnespick, Tomatin, and his house is at Auchenfroe, Nairn. He was awarded the M.C. when serving with his regiment, The Seaforth Highlanders, in Palestine in 1936, and won the D.S.O. in 1944, gaining a Bar to it in 1945.'

Travelling groups of musicians, showmen and entertainers were a common sight in the streets of Inverness during the 1880s-90s. Performing bears were a regular attraction and always drew a crowd. This bear is standing in Academy Street outside the old Rose Street Foundry building (now a bar) with house numbers 92-94 in the background, c1895. *

Jane Mary Urquhart (nee Sutherland) milking Bessie the cow at The Loans of Tullich, and giving two nephews a cup of milk in 1927. They are Angus Sutherland's children, Robert and David. Sir Michael William Selby Bruce, 11th Baronet, born Ensenada, Lower California on 27th March 1894 was an author and adventurer. Succeded his father, Sir William Waller Bruce, in 1912. Michael Bruce entered Abingdon School, then joined the British South Africa Police as a trooper in 1913. After First World War service with the Royal Artillery at Gallipoli and on the Western Front, Bruce became a traveller, largely in Africa and South America, and an author and newspaper columnist. Had a distinguished military career and made propaganda films during Second World War then returned to the Royal Air Force, serving in a barrage balloon unit, with 901 (County of London) squadron, Royal Air Force Regiment. Later in the war he was Senior Weapons Instructor for glider pilots at Bridgnorth. Had several publications including 'Songs From the Saddle,' 'Hunter's Yarns,' 'The Royal House of Bruce' and 'Tramp Royal.' He was the elder brother of actor Nigel Bruce and died at Vancouver, British Columbia on 20th May 1957.

Inverness Royal Academy Corridor, Art Department, 1912. Between 1895-1980 the IRA was located in the Midmills building, currently the UHI-Inverness College (2013). The classroom scene was photographed at the time of the completion of the first extension to the Academy, running along Midmills Road opposite the side entrance to the Crown Church. The accommodation was shared in the early years with Inverness High School, when that school occupied the building which now houses the Crown School, only a short distance away. Accommodation included rooms for science and art, with a gymnasium and these are 'posed' publicity shots. (Courtesy Inverness Royal Academy Archive IRAA_054).
