Benno Schotz (1891-1984) was born in Estonia, but emigrated to Glasgow in 1912, where he gained an engineering diploma from the Royal Technical College. From 1914 to 1923 he worked in the drawing office of John Brown and Co, a Clydebank shipbuilders, while attending evening classes in sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art. Although Schotz is frequently referred to as an Estonian sculptor, all his professional life was in Scotland. He became a naturalized British subject in 1930 and a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy, head of sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art (a post he held from 1938 until his retirement in 1961). He was made a Freeman of the City of Glasgow in 1981 and died in 1984. He is buried in Jerusalem. Courtesy John and Aithne Barron.

Joined Royal Engineers 1920; 2nd Lieutenant; Carried out railway survey work with Herbert and Murray in Tanganyika in 1930; Adjutant, Territorial Army 1933-1936; Officer for Technical Duties 1936-1939; World War II 1939-1945; Director of Movements, War Office 1949-1953; retired Major General in 1953. His father was Charles Greaves, teacher of commercial subjects and later of science at the Inverness Royal Academy, who retired from teaching in 1930. In 1905 the Highland Railway built four tank engines to work on its small branch lines. Numbered 25, 40, 45 and 46, they were the last locomotives to be built at the company's Lochgorm works in Inverness. Two of the class survived well into the days of British Railways. This photograph shows BR 55053 (previously HR45). It continued in service until withdrawn in January 1957. It was the last HR engine in service.

Hat band denotes HMS Armadale Castle. The SS Armadale Castle was a passenger steamship built in 1903 at Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering, Govan, Scotland. She was requisitioned from the Union Castle Line as an armed merchant cruiser in the Royal Navy in August 1914 and was used as a supply, transport and patrol vessel. She was returned to commercial service in 1919 and laid up at Netley in 1935, reprieved for one voyage, then scrapped in 1936 at Blyth. #
