Cattle being herded passed the taxi rank, Bank Street, Inverness, on their way to market. Towards the end of the 19th century, ordinary markets were held in Inverness every Tuesday and Friday. Livestock markets were held on the Fridays following the Muir of Ord markets. Two firms of agricultural auctioneers were established around this time - Hamilton's Auction Marts Ltd and Macdonald Fraser & Co Ltd. Inverness became an important centre for the sale of stock and the effects of this success were seen in the decreasing trade done at the Muir of Ord and other fairs. *

The Inverness Royal Academy War Memorial Hostel, June 1924. The hostel opened in 1922, with accommodation for about 60 girls. In the centre of the second-front row is the first matron, Miss Isabella Paterson. The hostel was partly funded by contributions from the Old Boys' Club, led by Evan Barron, a well-known former pupil. The building first used was the former Inverness Collegiate School building in Ardross Street, which is now the oldest part of the Highland Council Headquarters buildings. The hostel was moved to Hedgefield House in Culduthel Road in 1934. (Courtesy Inverness Royal Academy Archive IRAA_058).

Church Street looking towards Bridge Street. The town clock steeple still exists but the buildings housing McGruther & Marshall and Margaret Macleod Ladies Outfitters are gone, including the alleyway leading to a back entrance of Gellion's Hotel, which is located on Bridge Street. The site is now occupied by Fife Country. The building on the far right is now McEwens of Perth. The clock steeple was erected beside the adjoining Court House and jail in 1791 and rises 45 metres. Gellions is the oldest pub in Inverness, established in 1841.*
