Cattle being herded passed the taxi rank, Bank Street, Inverness, on their way to market. Towards the end of the 19th century, ordinary markets were held in Inverness every Tuesday and Friday. Livestock markets were held on the Fridays following the Muir of Ord markets. Two firms of agricultural auctioneers were established around this time - Hamilton's Auction Marts Ltd and Macdonald Fraser & Co Ltd. Inverness became an important centre for the sale of stock and the effects of this success were seen in the decreasing trade done at the Muir of Ord and other fairs. *
