Gamekeeper David Sutherland with his brother Angus. The Sutherlands were originally from Kildonan but moved to Hilton village near Fearn. Angus was the Factor at Carbisdale Castle. David later served in the Inverness-shire Constabulary (1880-1887). Originally a gamekeeper in Helmsdale, he served in the police at Dores, then four years on Barra, then Locheport (North Uist), from where he returned to gamekeeping. He finished up owning the Hilton village pub and used to buy the newspaper and read it to the other villagers on the way back to the hotel. Submitted by Carole Urquhart James. (AP/H-0274)
