Joined Royal Engineers 1920; 2nd Lieutenant; Carried out railway survey work with Herbert and Murray in Tanganyika in 1930; Adjutant, Territorial Army 1933-1936; Officer for Technical Duties 1936-1939; World War II 1939-1945; Director of Movements, War Office 1949-1953; retired Major General in 1953. His father was Charles Greaves, teacher of commercial subjects and later of science at the Inverness Royal Academy, who retired from teaching in 1930.
