Angus (oldest son of David) Sutherland, 20 Grosvenor Street,  Invergordon, (known as the Admiralty Cottages). Fought in the Boer War with John Urquhart. Became a Chief Constable of Stirlingshire, and is buried near the wall of Stirling Castle. Submitted by Carole Urquhart James.

Gamekeeper David Sutherland with his brother Angus. The Sutherlands were originally from Kildonan but moved to Hilton village near Fearn. Angus was the Factor at Carbisdale Castle. David later served in the Inverness-shire Constabulary (1880-1887). Originally a gamekeeper in Helmsdale, he served in the police at Dores, then four years on Barra, then Locheport (North Uist), from where he returned to gamekeeping. He finished up owning the Hilton village pub and used to buy the newspaper and read it to the other villagers on the way back to the hotel. Submitted by Carole Urquhart James. (AP/H-0274)

The Duchess of Sutherland (1867-1955) walking down Academy Street, Inverness in 1936. Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower was a British society hostess, social reformer, author, editor, journalist and playwright, often using the pen name Erskine Gower. Her first husband was Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland. By her two later marriages, she was known as Lady Millicent Fitzgerald and Lady Millicent Hawes, the latter of which was the name she used at the time of her death. She lived mostly in France through the 1920s and 1930s, and also travelled. She was living near Angers in 1940, and was captured after the German occupation of France. She escaped via Spain and Portugal to the United States, and returned to Paris in 1945. She died in Orriule in south-west France and was cremated in Paris, her ashes being interred at the Sutherland private cemetery at Dunrobin Castle. She was survived by her eldest son, George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland.

Mackinlays & Birnie Ltd. Glen Albyn Distillery, Muirtown Basin, Inverness. Established by Inverness Provost James Sutherland in 1846. Closed during 1917-1919 and used as a US naval base, until acquired by Mackinlays & Birnie (of Glen Mhor) in 1920. Closed down in 1983 and knocked down in 1988 for a supermarket development.*
