Corporal James Dalgleish Pollock (1890-1958). The Cameron Highlanders, The Depot. One of four VC winners re-copied for a composite picture in January 1929. Pollock was 25 years old, and a corporal in the The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders during the First World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC: On 27th September 1915 near the Hohenzollern Redoubt, France, at about noon the enemy's bombers in superior numbers were successfully working up Little Willie Trench towards the Redoubt. Corporal Pollock, after obtaining permission, got out of the trench alone and walked along the top edge with complete disregard for danger, and compelled the enemy bombers to retire by bombing them from above. He was under heavy machine-gun fire the whole time, but contrived to hold up the progress of the Germans for an hour before he was at length wounded. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Regimental Museum of Queen's Own Highlanders, Fort George.

Invergarry Castle. Built on 'the Rock of the Raven,' the castle was last occupied in 1746. In that year, in retribution for Glengarry's prominent role in the Jacobite campaign, Cumberland's troops pillaged and burnt his stronghold before using gunpowder to demolish a corner of the castle, ending a turbulent 80 year period of attack and counter-attack on the castle. The 'new' castle had been built to replace an earlier one destroyed by General Monk in 1654. After Culloden the castle was never rebuilt and the ruins still stand in the grounds of the Glengarry Castle Hotel.*

Artillery guns and Flora Macdonald statue overlooking the River Ness from Castle Hill, Inverness. Flora helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape after the Jacobite Rebellion failure in 1746. The statue was unveiled in July 1899. On the left is an 1873 German cannon captured by the Cameron Highlanders in the First World War. The cannon on the right was a trophy from Sebastopol in the Crimean War, presented to Inverness on 4th August 1857. It sits on a cast metal carriage built by the Rose Street Foundry. The were two Russian guns and 'Inverness Advertiser' wrote that 'The guns are 45-pounders, weighing about 56 cwts. each. They are from Sebastopol, and seem to have seen hard service, both being partially damaged.' It's unsure when the guns disappeared. They were probably removed from the castle at the time of the Castle Street landslide which took place on 11th October 1932. The remaining guns were sold as scrap, supposedly for the war effort, by the County Council in 1941. *

The last ship to bear that name before the current Pembroke, served as Flagship to the Commander in Chief Fleet and was a 101-gun screw propelled first rate. Launched in 1859 as HMS Duncan she was renamed HMS Pembroke on her transferral to harbour service in 1890, renamed HMS Tenedos II in 1905 and sold in 1910. HMS Pembroke, the Royal Naval Barracks at Chatham, were opened in 1903.
