Inverness Royal Academy Science Laboratory, Academy, 1912. Between 1895-1980 the IRA was located in the Midmills building, currently the UHI-Inverness College (2013). The classroom scene was photographed at the time of the completion of the first extension to the Academy, running along Midmills Road opposite the side entrance to the Crown Church. The accommodation was shared in the early years with Inverness High School, when that school occupied the building which now houses the Crown School, only a short distance away. Accommodation included rooms for science and art, with a gymnasium and these are 'posed' publicity shots. This image was captioned Science Lab of Mr J.M. Benno Schotz (1891-1984) was born in Estonia, but emigrated to Glasgow in 1912, where he gained an engineering diploma from the Royal Technical College. From 1914 to 1923 he worked in the drawing office of John Brown and Co, a Clydebank shipbuilders, while attending evening classes in sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art. Although Schotz is frequently referred to as an Estonian sculptor, all his professional life was in Scotland. He became a naturalized British subject in 1930 and a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy, head of sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art (a post he held from 1938 until his retirement in 1961). He was made a Freeman of the City of Glasgow in 1981 and died in 1984. He is buried in Jerusalem. Courtesy John and Aithne Barron.

Sir Daniel Macauley Stevenson (1851-1944) was a Scottish politician, businessman and philanthropist, and former Chancellor of the University of Glasgow. He made his fortune in the shipbroking and coal exportation industries and whilst on the City Council he was responsible for the Sunday-opening of the City's museums and galleries in 1898, the establishment of free branch libraries in 1899 and the introduction of a municipal telephone service in 1900. He was elected Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1911 until 1914, at which point he was awarded an honorary LL.D. by the University of Glasgow, and was created a Baronet, of Cleveden, Kelvinside, in the County of the City of Glasgow. Sir Leslie Joseph. Ex-Major Joseph became an amusement park entrepreneur who devised popular water chutes. The first was at Coney Beach (Porthcawl) in 1936. The Porthcawl chute was followed after the war by larger rides at Battersea Fun Fair (London, 1956), Belle Vue (Manchester, 1957) and the Kursaal (Southend-on-Sea, 1958). He became Managing Director of the Festival Pleasure Gardens in 1951 and was knighted in 1952. In April 1956 he gained, along with restaurant magnate Charles Forte, control of the Belle Vue Zoological Gardens for ?200,000. The 68 acre location contained a major zoo, a 30,000 capacity stadium, the 7,000 seat King's Hall (used for circuses), the 600 ft long exhibition hall and restaurants.
